Choose the information you want to display

With Géoportail you can choose what geographical information you want to view, so that you can display your very own customised map.

Layers catalogue

Aerial photography is the default layer displayed.
But Géoportail has plenty of other information layers for you to choose from!

In the catalogue, the various information layers are grouped together in sections by theme. The names of the sections appear in CAPITAL LETTERS: MAPS, PHOTOGRAPHS, ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS etc. Open a section (e.g. MAPS), then click on the information layer (e.g. IGN map) you want to display in the viewing zone.

NB: if the layer displays in grey, it means it cannot be viewed at the scale you have chosen. If this happens, just increase or reduce the scale (e.g. go from “Town” to “Street”).

Some layers can only be viewed in a particular territory (e.g. Canton of Geneva).

My selection

Layers you choose from the Layers Catalogue are automatically added to the “My Selection” zone.
Information layers can be displayed individually or stacked on top of each other. You can stack as many layers as you like (however, if you want to display a large number of layers, it may take longer for them to appear in the viewing zone).

Things you can do in a given layer
Once you have chosen a layer there are a number of things you can do:

- change its position (place in the stacking order)

- alter its transparency

- display the key

- delete it from your selection.

Save your selection

You can save your selection of layers by clicking on the disk-shaped icon.

NB: in the “Saved Selections” menu you will find any selections you had saved earlier on our previous viewing interface (before April 2008).

By choosing the information you want to see displayed on screen, their stacking order, their transparency etc. you can create your very own customised map.
