2D and 3D data updates

2D and 3D data updates

Géoportail regularly updates its aerial photos and other data. Find out how often updates take place.

Aerial photographs

Aerial photographs were taken between April and October 2009.

The images are then processed (distortion correction, colorimetry, geographical referencing etc.) so that they can be exploited by the special software used by geographers, following which they are optimised so as to be compatible with a range of media, including Géoportail.

Before it is published on Géoportail, an aerial photo of a department of France undergoes the various processes needed to ensure the best possible data and image quality – this takes around 12 months on average.

3D data updates

Since November 2009, aerial photographs have been streamed in real time in 2D and 3D.

So the data being viewed is always the most up-to-date.

Maps

IGN maps are continually updated and maps on Géoportail are updated every three months.

Land registry parcels

Géoportail updates land registry parcels in line with the updating of the French large scale reference map (RGE).

Buildings, roads, hydrography, geodetic sites etc.

Géoportail updates this data every three months.

Geographical data provided by Géoportail partners are updated at the partner’s instigation.

Géoportail’s interoperable nature means that geographical data from its partners’ servers can be displayed directly: thus, data enabling Spanish maps to be displayed are sent from the IDEE servers in Spain, and processed “on the fly” for viewing on Géoportail.

The French large scale reference map (RGE- Référentiel à Grande Echelle) is the keystone of geographical data display on Géoportail.

The large scale reference map, produced by IGN as part of its public service mandate, contains the major geographical information needed to describe French territories and their use: photography, topography, land parcels and addresses.
The data is reprocessed for use by the Géoportail viewing interface.
Géoportail data thus has the benefit of the regular updating of the large scale reference map.
