Land use
The Corine Land Cover can now be accessed via Géoportail and enables viewing of land cover in metropolitan France. As such it is an excellent tool for measuring environmental impacts.
How do I display the CORINE Land Cover 2006 layer?
Open the “land cover” section, then tick the “CORINE LC 2006” layer.
The layer can be viewed:
- on a scale of 1:8 192 000 (overview of the whole metropolitan territory of France)
- on a scale of 1:64 000 (town)
Help with reading the map
Five broad types of land cover are described:
- Artificial territories
- Agricultural territories
- Forests and semi-natural areas
- Wetlands
- Water surfaces ![]()

Europe’s environmental information reference data baseThe CORINE Land Cover geographical data base is part of the CORINE European programme for coordinating environmental information.In France, the Department of Observation and Statistics (SOeS), a branch of the Ministry for Ecology, the Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development, is responsible for producing, maintaining and publishing the data. The data enable the analysis of land cover and how it develops: artificialisation, urban development, monitoring of protected areas, forest development, effects of storms etc.
