Avalanche Cartography
3D View   |   2D View
The “Probable Avalanche Location Map” (Carte de Localisation des Phénomènes d’Avalanches - CLPA), produced jointly by the French Ministry for Ecology and Sustainable Development (MEDAD) and the CEMAGREF (French Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Research), reminds us that while mountains present certain constraints, it is possible to build and use land in mountainous areas as long as the risk of avalanche is properly catered for.
Towards a more comprehensive risk cartography
Following the publishing of the 2D and 3D views, the IGN layers and partner layers (INA, CNJP), the CLPA layer is a new public service "theme section" provided by Géoportail.
Other theme layers will later be superimposed on Géoportail’s reference data.
Living geography in the light of past records
The "Probable Avalanche Location Map" superimposes two cartographies. One involves the mapping of avalanches people have actually witnessed, kept "as a reminder", so to speak, whilst the other concerns traces of avalanches that have been observed in the field or by examining aerial photographs.
